Watch the play “Behind the Beautiful Flowers” on October 25, 6:30pm or October 26, 10am at Noosa Arts Theatre.
Based on the book by Katherine Boo with the play written by David Hare, the story goes like this: Amidst India pushing for its global ambition and all its chic hotels around Mubai airport, slums are still everywhere with people who want to do things on their own. Meet Zehrunisa and her son Abdul with a goal of recycling a lot of garbage until they get to save enough for a real house; Sunil, who is too small for his age of 12 but desires to eat until he is about the same height as Kalu the thief; Asha who is plotting to steal government anti-poverty funds to make it to the first class economic status; and Manju, daughter of Asha, who strives in her studies to become the slum’s first female graduate. Great dreams but not good enough what with the global recession that may end the garbage trade and another slum dweller who is about to ruin everything in the neighbourhood.
Immerse yourself in the Mumbai slums while seating back and getting touched by the play. Boo made a great research on this by spending three years in Annawadi observing and taking notes of the lives of its residents.
